Vetmedin (pimobendan) has a relatively short half-life in dogs, meaning the time it takes for half of the drug to be eliminated from the body is about two hours. However, this doesn't mean the drug is entirely out of their system after four hours. Some of the drug gets broken down into metabolites, which can also be active and contribute to the overall therapeutic effect. Generally, it takes about 12 hours for the majority of Vetmedin and its metabolites to be eliminated from a dog's system. This is why it's typically administered twice a day.
