For adults and children 12 years and older, the usual Zyrtec (cetirizine) dose is 5 mg or 10 mg by mouth once daily, depending on symptom severity. Do not take more than 10 mg in 24 hours unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Zyrtec may be taken with or without food. A 5 mg dose may be sufficient for milder symptoms or for people who experience drowsiness. Cetirizine can still cause sleepiness in some people, so use caution when driving and avoid combining it with alcohol or other sedating medicines.
People with kidney or liver disease, older adults, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ask a healthcare professional before use, as a lower dose or different schedule may be appropriate.
