Plecanatide is a medication used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. It works by mimicking the action of a naturally occurring peptide called uroguanylin, which activates guanylate cyclase-C receptors on the surface of the intestinal epithelium. This action increases the secretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen, leading to increased intestinal fluid and accelerated transit, thereby facilitating bowel movements.
