Yes, Tazorac® (tazarotene) and Fosamax® (alendronate) can generally be used together; no specific clinically significant interaction is listed between them. Tazorac is a topical retinoid, while Fosamax is an oral bisphosphonate, so they do not have an obvious absorption conflict with each other.
A few practical cautions:
- Tazorac: the label says no formal drug–drug interaction studies were conducted, and the main issues are skin irritation, sun sensitivity, and pregnancy contraindication. It should be avoided in pregnancy and used with contraception in patients who can become pregnant.
- Fosamax: must be taken first thing in the morning with plain water, at least 30 minutes before food, drinks, or other oral medications, and you should remain upright for at least 30 minutes. This timing issue does not apply to applying Tazorac to the skin.
