Key safety measures for Campral / acamprosate:
Campral is intended to help maintain abstinence from alcohol after a person has already stopped drinking, and it works best as part of a broader plan that includes counseling, support groups, or other psychosocial support. It does not treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms, so withdrawal should be managed separately with medical guidance.
Before starting it, tell your prescriber if you have kidney disease. Acamprosate needs dose reduction in moderate kidney impairment and is contraindicated in severe kidney impairment. Also tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, have depression, have had suicidal thoughts or attempts, or use other prescription/nonprescription drugs, supplements, or street drugs.
Take it exactly as prescribed. It is usually taken three times daily, often with meals to help remember doses. Because it is a delayed-release tablet, swallow it whole; do not split, crush, or chew it. Do not take more or less than prescribed.
Do not stop it on your own. Acamprosate only helps prevent drinking while you keep taking it. If you drink alcohol while taking it, continue the medication and call your doctor; it does not cause a disulfiram-like “sick reaction” with alcohol.
Watch mood and safety closely. Depression and suicidal thoughts/behavior are important warnings. You or family/caregivers should contact a healthcare professional right away for worsening sadness, hopelessness, agitation, sleep or appetite changes, loss of interest, or any thoughts of self-harm. In urgent danger, call emergency services or a crisis line immediately.
Use caution with driving or machinery until you know how it affects you, since it may affect thinking, coordination, or decision-making.
Know common side effects: diarrhea, gas/upset stomach, nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth, dizziness, itching, weakness, anxiety, insomnia, and sweating. Call your doctor if these are severe, persistent, or unusual; seek prompt medical advice for rash or burning/tingling/numbness in the limbs.
Missed dose: take it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose; do not double up.
Storage: keep it tightly closed, at room temperature, away from heat/moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of expired or unused medication safely, such as through a medicine take-back program.
