Shake the bottle well before each dose. For adults and children 12 years and older, take 5–10 mL (1–2 teaspoonfuls) by mouth every 2–3 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 50 mL in 24 hours. Measure doses with a medication cup or oral syringe rather than a household spoon. It may be mixed with an equal amount of honey, if preferred.
Follow the directions on your specific bottle, because formulations can differ. The current Canadian Buckley’s Original Mixture contains ammonium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, menthol and camphor—not guaifenesin—so verify the ingredient label to make sure you have the intended product.
Consult a healthcare professional if the cough worsens, lasts longer than seven days, or occurs with high fever, rash, persistent headache or excessive mucus.
