Questran, which contains the active ingredient cholestyramine, is primarily used to lower high levels of cholesterol in the blood, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It works by binding bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption, and thereby prompting the liver to use more cholesterol to produce bile acids, which reduces blood cholesterol levels. Additionally, it can be used to relieve itching caused by partial biliary obstruction.
