Bactroban (mupirocin 2%) is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections, especially:
- Impetigo, commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
- Infected minor cuts, scrapes, wounds or other damaged skin, depending on whether the product is a cream or ointment
It does not treat fungal infections, viruses, eczema or ordinary acne unless a bacterial infection is also present.
Apply it only as prescribed and avoid the eyes and mouth. Regular Bactroban skin ointment should not be placed inside the nose unless it is specifically the nasal formulation prescribed for that purpose. Seek medical advice if redness spreads, pain or swelling worsens, pus increases, fever develops, or the infection does not improve.
