Caution is needed in patients with a history of urolithiasis (kidney stones) due to potential transient hypercalciuria. Baseline and periodic monitoring of serum calcium, uric acid, and urinary calcium may be warranted. There is also an increased incidence of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) in animal studies, although not confirmed in humans. It is not recommended for pediatric patients or young adults with open epiphyses (growing bones). These cautions help ensure the medication is used safely and in the right patient population.
