It works by blocking hydroxy-methyl glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), an enzyme in the liver responsible for making cholesterol. Blocking this enzyme decreases cholesterol production, which helps lower blood cholesterol levels and protect heart health. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are commonly called "statins."
