You should not take this medication if you have acute metabolic acidosis (which is when acid levels in your blood are too high), diabetic precoma (a state leading up to diabetic coma), liver problems, kidney problems, dehydration, severe infection, shock, decreased oxygen levels, heart failure, lung failure, or if you have recently had a heart attack. You also should not take it if you are intoxicated with alcohol or consume excessive amounts of alcohol. These conditions increase the risk of serious side effects, so it’s important to discuss your full medical history with your doctor.
