The active ingredient in Eylea® is aflibercept.
Aflibercept is a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor. It works by binding to VEGF proteins, which helps reduce the growth of abnormal blood vessels and decrease fluid leakage and swelling in the retina.
Eylea is given as an injection into the eye (intravitreal injection) by an eye-care specialist. It is commonly used to treat conditions including wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), diabetic retinopathy, and macular edema following retinal vein occlusion.
Both Eylea® and Eylea HD® contain aflibercept as the active ingredient, although the formulations and drug concentrations differ.
