Ozempic is a prescription semaglutide medicine, a GLP-1 receptor agonist.
It is mainly used for adults with type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control. The injectable form is also used in adults with type 2 diabetes to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death when they have established heart disease, and to reduce certain kidney/cardiovascular risks in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
A key point: Ozempic is not approved as a weight-loss drug, though weight loss can occur while taking it. Semaglutide is used for weight management under other branding, such as Wegovy, depending on the indication. Ozempic’s own prescribing information/site distinguishes diabetes-related uses from weight-loss treatment.
It should only be used under medical supervision because it has important risks and may not be appropriate for some people.
