Yes. A 3-month-old baby can be prescribed erythromycin, including E.E.S. (erythromycin ethylsuccinate), for certain bacterial infections. The dose must be calculated by the baby’s weight, condition and the liquid’s concentration, so give it only when prescribed specifically for that baby. E.E.S. suspensions may come in different strengths, such as 200 mg/5 mL and 400 mg/5 mL.
Erythromycin has been associated with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, although the risk is greatest during the first weeks after birth. Contact the prescriber promptly if the baby develops repeated or forceful vomiting, feeding difficulty or unusual irritability while feeding.
Do not use leftover erythromycin or estimate the dose yourself. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe rash, extreme sleepiness, dehydration or persistent vomiting.
