For E.E.S. (erythromycin ethylsuccinate), there are no routine foods that must be avoided; the liquid can be given with or without food.
For a 3-month-old baby, avoid:
- Giving any other prescription, over-the-counter medicine, vitamin or herbal product unless the pediatrician or pharmacist approves it.
- Using a household teaspoon—measure the exact prescribed dose with an oral syringe.
- Giving extra medicine after a missed dose; never double the next dose.
- Stopping the antibiotic early unless the prescriber tells you to.
- Mixing the dose into a full bottle, because the baby may not finish it and receive the complete dose. Shake the suspension well before measuring.
Erythromycin has important interactions with certain heart-rhythm medicines and drugs such as pimozide, cisapride, ergotamine, simvastatin and lovastatin, although these are generally not medications an infant would use.
Contact the baby’s doctor promptly for repeated or forceful vomiting, difficulty feeding, fewer wet diapers, yellow skin or eyes, severe diarrhea or a rash. Trouble breathing or facial swelling requires emergency care.
