There is no fixed maximum duration for taking sevelamer. Because it treats high phosphorus associated with chronic kidney disease—particularly in people receiving dialysis—it is often taken long term, potentially for many years, as long as it remains necessary, effective and tolerated. The prescribing information does not specify a treatment limit.
Your healthcare team will adjust or stop it based on:
- Blood phosphorus levels
- Dialysis and dietary changes
- Side effects or swallowing/bowel problems
- Kidney transplant or improvement in phosphorus control
Phosphorus is generally checked regularly, and doses may initially be adjusted no more often than every two weeks. Long-term monitoring may also include bicarbonate, chloride and certain vitamin levels.
Do not stop sevelamer without speaking with your kidney specialist. Seek prompt medical advice for severe constipation, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, trouble swallowing or inability to pass stool or gas, because rare bowel obstruction or perforation has been reported.
