Renvela (sevelamer carbonate) is used to lower high phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are receiving dialysis. It is approved for adults and children aged 6 years and older in the U.S.
It is a phosphate binder: when taken with meals, it binds phosphorus from food inside the digestive tract so less phosphorus enters the bloodstream. Controlling phosphorus helps reduce complications such as:
- Bone weakening and itching
- Calcium deposits in blood vessels and soft tissues
- Overactivity of the parathyroid glands
Renvela does not repair kidney function and is not a dialysis substitute. It should be taken with meals at the dose prescribed, with blood phosphorus monitored regularly.
