Bricanyl (terbutaline) can cause side effects typical of fast-acting bronchodilators. With Bricanyl Turbuhaler, the more common side effects include shakiness/tremor, a pounding or noticeable heartbeat (palpitations), restlessness, headache, muscle cramps, and nervousness. These effects are often more noticeable when treatment is first started and may lessen over time.
Other reported side effects include fast heart rate, dizziness, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. Less commonly, Bricanyl can cause abnormal heart rhythms. Beta-2 agonists such as terbutaline can also lower blood potassium levels, particularly at higher doses or when combined with certain other medicines.
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe chest pain, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness/fainting, an allergic reaction, or breathing that suddenly becomes worse immediately after using the inhaler. That last reaction, called paradoxical bronchospasm, is uncommon but potentially serious.
