The most common side effects of Ridaura (auranofin) involve the digestive system and skin. According to the current U.S. prescribing information, these include:
- Diarrhea or loose stools — about 47%
- Skin rash — about 24%
- Itching — about 17%
- Abdominal pain — about 14%
- Mouth sores or inflammation (stomatitis) — about 13%
- Nausea, with or without vomiting — about 10%
- Less commonly: constipation, reduced appetite, gas, indigestion, altered taste, hair loss, hives, and elevated liver enzymes.
More serious but uncommon side effects include low blood cell counts, kidney problems such as protein or blood in the urine, severe intestinal inflammation or gastrointestinal bleeding, liver injury/jaundice, severe allergic swelling, and interstitial pneumonitis.
Ridaura also carries a boxed warning for gold toxicity. Persistent diarrhea, rash or itching, mouth sores, unusual bruising or bleeding, marked weakness, or changes in urination should be reported promptly because they can indicate toxicity. Blood counts and urine testing are generally monitored during treatment.
