While taking Flagyl (metronidazole) syrup/oral suspension, the main things to avoid are:
- Alcohol — avoid beer, wine, liquor, and alcohol-containing products during treatment and for at least 3 days after your last dose. Combining them may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, and flushing.
- Products containing propylene glycol — these should also be avoided during treatment and for at least 3 days afterward. Check liquid medicines, mouthwashes, and other products if you're unsure.
- Disulfiram (Antabuse) — metronidazole should not be taken if you've used disulfiram within the previous 2 weeks.
- Don't start or stop interacting medicines without checking with a pharmacist or prescriber, especially warfarin or other oral blood thinners, lithium, or busulfan, because metronidazole can affect their levels or effects.
- Don't skip doses or stop early just because you feel better; take the prescribed course as directed.
There aren't usually specific foods you need to avoid with metronidazole. If the syrup upsets your stomach, taking it as directed with food may help, depending on your specific product instructions.
