For dogs, oral acepromazine usually begins taking effect within about 30–60 minutes. Veterinarians commonly recommend giving the tablet about 45 minutes to 1 hour before the stressful event or procedure.
The sedative effect commonly lasts around 1–4 hours, although some dogs can remain sleepy or affected much longer—occasionally up to 24 hours.
Watch for expected effects such as sleepiness, reduced activity, and some wobbliness. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog becomes extremely weak, collapses, has pale gums, shallow breathing, seizures, or seems excessively sedated.
