Dolutegravir (TIVICAY) is an HIV medication that helps stop HIV from multiplying in the body. It belongs to a class called integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs).
It works by blocking an HIV enzyme called integrase. HIV needs this enzyme to insert its genetic material into human immune cells. By blocking that step, dolutegravir reduces the virus's ability to make new copies.
When taken consistently with the other prescribed HIV medicines, dolutegravir can:
- Lower the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load)
- Help the immune system stay stronger
- Reduce the risk of HIV-related illness
- Reduce the risk of transmitting HIV when viral suppression is maintained.
Dolutegravir does not cure HIV, so treatment generally needs to be continued as prescribed.
Some people experience side effects such as headache, trouble sleeping, or tiredness. Rare but serious reactions can include severe allergic reactions or liver problems.
