While taking fexofenadine (Allegra), the main things to avoid are:
- Fruit juices, especially grapefruit, orange, and apple juice. They can reduce how much fexofenadine your body absorbs and make it less effective. Take it with plain water instead.
- Aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids at the same time, such as some formulations of Maalox or Mylanta. They can significantly reduce fexofenadine absorption.
- Taking more than the recommended dose. For Allegra 12 Hour 60 mg, the usual adult dose is one tablet every 12 hours, not two at once.
- Be cautious with driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Fexofenadine is usually non-drowsy, but some people can still experience dizziness or drowsiness.
If you have kidney disease, check with a healthcare professional because you may need a different dose.
Best way to take it: take your Allegra with a full glass of water, and avoid taking it with juice or at the same time as aluminum/magnesium antacids.
