While taking Adalat (nifedipine), the main things to avoid are:
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice — they can significantly increase nifedipine levels and raise the risk of low blood pressure, dizziness, headache, or flushing.
- Crushing, chewing, splitting, or breaking extended-release tablets — swallow them whole so the medication releases properly.
- Taking Adalat CC with food — the Adalat CC formulation is generally taken on an empty stomach, as directed on its label.
- Starting new medications or supplements without checking first. Some drugs can substantially change nifedipine levels. For example, strong enzyme inducers such as rifampin should not be combined with nifedipine.
- Be cautious with alcohol, especially when starting treatment, because it may worsen dizziness or lightheadedness from lowered blood pressure.
Also, stand up slowly if you feel dizzy, and don't stop nifedipine suddenly without discussing it with your healthcare provider.
If you're taking Adalat XL rather than Adalat CC, tell me what strength you have (30, 60, or 90 mg), and I can give you the specific instructions for that formulation.
