Ixazomib capsules (brand name NINLARO) are used to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow.
In the U.S., ixazomib is approved in combination with lenalidomide (Revlimid) and dexamethasone for adults with multiple myeloma who have received at least one previous treatment.
Ixazomib is a proteasome inhibitor. It blocks proteasomes, which cancer cells use to break down unwanted proteins. This causes proteins to build up inside the myeloma cells, helping slow their growth and leading to cell death.
NINLARO is not recommended as maintenance treatment or for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma with lenalidomide and dexamethasone outside a controlled clinical trial.
