The main drugs used to lower prolactin levels are dopamine agonists:
- Cabergoline (Dostinex) — often the preferred treatment because it is effective and usually taken only once or twice weekly.
- Bromocriptine (Parlodel) — also lowers prolactin and may be used in certain situations, including when pregnancy is being considered.
These medicines are commonly prescribed for hyperprolactinemia and prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors (prolactinomas).
If high prolactin is caused by another medication—such as certain antipsychotics—the approach may instead involve adjusting or changing that medication under a healthcare provider’s supervision.
