While using granisetron, there usually aren’t specific foods you need to avoid. However, a few precautions are important:
- Don’t take other granisetron-containing products unless your doctor specifically instructs you to.
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining granisetron with serotonergic medicines such as SSRIs/SNRIs, tramadol, or certain migraine medicines. The combination can rarely contribute to serotonin syndrome.
- Use caution with medicines that can prolong the QT interval or affect heart rhythm, particularly if you have heart disease or low potassium/magnesium levels.
- If you develop significant abdominal swelling, pain, or severe constipation, contact your healthcare provider because granisetron can sometimes mask an intestinal blockage.
- If you use the Sancuso® granisetron patch: avoid heating pads, heat lamps, and prolonged heat near the patch. Also keep the patch site protected from direct sunlight or tanning lamps while wearing it and for 10 days after removal.
There is no established grapefruit or routine dietary restriction with granisetron. Always give your pharmacist a complete medication list so they can check for interactions.
