Colace (docusate) is technically a laxative, specifically a stool-softener laxative.
It works by helping water and fats mix into the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Unlike stimulant laxatives such as senna or bisacodyl, Colace doesn’t directly stimulate the bowel muscles to cause a bowel movement.
It typically takes about 12–72 hours to work.
