When taking Colace (docusate), the main thing to avoid is mineral oil unless your doctor specifically tells you to use both. Docusate can increase the absorption of mineral oil, which may lead to unwanted effects.
Also avoid taking more than the recommended dose or using Colace for longer than about 1 week without medical advice. Check with a healthcare professional before using it if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or a sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than 2 weeks.
Stop taking it and seek medical advice if you develop rectal bleeding or still do not have a bowel movement after using it.
Colace can generally be taken with or without food, and taking it with a full glass of water is recommended.
