NUPRO includes garlic because the manufacturer uses it as a source of allicin, a sulfur-containing compound with antioxidant activity. NUPRO says the garlic is intended to support immune and cardiovascular health in pets.
There is an important safety consideration, though: garlic can be toxic to dogs and especially cats at sufficient doses. Allium compounds can damage red blood cells and potentially cause hemolytic anemia. Merck notes that concentrated garlic products can pose particular risk, and the ASPCA lists garlic as toxic to both dogs and cats.
So, if you're using NUPRO, I would stick strictly to the labeled serving amount and avoid adding extra garlic to your pet's diet. For a cat, a small dog, or a pet with anemia or another medical condition, checking with a veterinarian before regular use would be prudent.
