Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) is generally well tolerated when taken at the prescribed dose. Most people experience few or no side effects. However, certain symptoms can occur, particularly with high doses or prolonged use.
Common or milder side effects
-
Nausea: Feeling sick to your stomach.
-
Constipation: Difficulty passing stools.
-
Loss of appetite: Reduced desire to eat.
-
Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak.
-
Pale skin: A less commonly reported effect.
These symptoms should be discussed with your healthcare provider if they persist or worsen.
Serious side effects
Taking excessive vitamin D2 can cause hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood). Warning signs include:
-
Excessive thirst or frequent urination
-
Persistent nausea or vomiting
-
Muscle weakness, aches, or stiffness
-
Unusual drowsiness or confusion
-
Severe constipation
-
Unexplained weight loss
Contact your healthcare provider promptly if these occur. Severe vitamin D toxicity can also cause kidney stones or kidney damage.
Rare allergic reactions can cause a rash, hives, or swelling. Seek emergency care if you develop swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.
How to reduce the risk
Take ergocalciferol exactly as prescribed, avoid adding extra vitamin D or calcium supplements without medical guidance, and complete recommended blood tests to monitor vitamin D and calcium levels.
