Voltarol 1.16% Emulgel (diclofenac diethylammonium) can cause side effects, although most are mild and occur on the skin where the gel is applied. As a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), it generally causes fewer whole-body side effects than oral diclofenac.
Common side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 10 people:

-
Skin rash
-
Eczema

Mild burning, stinging, or irritation at the application site

Breathing difficulties: Wheezing, asthma symptoms, or chest tightness.

How to reduce the risk of side effects
-
Apply only the recommended amount to clean, intact skin.
-
Avoid applying the gel to open wounds, cuts, or irritated skin.
-
Avoid excessive sunlight on treated areas.
-
Do not use airtight bandages over the application site.
-
Avoid using the gel over large areas or for extended periods without medical advice.
Important: Stop using Voltarol Emulgel if you develop a skin rash. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.
Although uncommon, using excessive amounts over large areas for prolonged periods can increase the risk of systemic NSAID side effects, including gastrointestinal, kidney, and cardiovascular complications.
